How to Buy Milan Metro Tickets at the Metro Station - a Step by Step Guide
To buy Milan Metro tickets at the metro station, follow these steps:
Go to the ticket purchasing machines available at every metro station. Their bright orange color makes them highly recognizable, so you can't miss them. Here is what they look like.
The ticket purchasing process is straightforward. All machines are equipped with touch screens. Tap on the 'Start/Inizia' button to start the purchasing process. The machines are usually set to Italian by default. If you need to change the language, simply touch the icon at the top right corner of the screen. You can then choose your preferred language from the available options: English, Spanish, German, Russian, Chinese, or French.
choose the type of ticket you wish to purchase. These are the most popular options:
A Single Ticket: Costs €2.20 and offers 90 minutes from the time of validation of unlimited rides within the metro, trams and buses in the urban area (zones 1-3).
A Daily Ticket: Costs €7.60 and provides 24 hours from the time of validation of unlimited travel within the metro, trams, and buses in the urban area (zones 1-3).
A Three-Day Ticket: Costs €13.00 and allows unlimited travel for 3 consecutive days within the metro, trams, and buses in the urban area (zones 1-3).
A Booklet of 10 Tickets: Costs €19.50 and offers ten single tickets, each valid for 90 minutes of unlimited transfers within the metro, trams, and buses in the urban area.
New RicaricaMi Ticket: You now have the option to purchase the new RicaricaMi top-up ticket, which will replace the old ones. The fares remain the same, and old tickets can be used until November 30th. This rechargeable ticket offers the same benefits as regular tickets but can be recharged as needed.
Usually the machines will immediately suggest a single ticket purchase to simplify and speed up the process. If this is the type of ticket you wish to purchase, simply touch 'purchase' to select this option.
If you want to purchase a different type of ticket, touch the "Tickets carnets and destinations" button. On the next screen, you can choose the ticket that best suits your needs.
If you already have the new RicaricaMi Ticket and wish to top it up, press the "Recharge a ticket you already have" button. On the following screen, select the number of tickets you want to add to your RicaricaMi Ticket.
Select the number of tickets you wish to buy. Touch the + sign to add an additional ticket and the - sign to reduce the ticket quantity. Once you select the quantity, touch the payment button to pay for your selected tickets.
Pay for your selected tickets by touching your preferred payment option. You can pay with major credit or debit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. You can also pay with cash.
Before printing the ticket, you will be asked if you need a receipt. It is always recommended to print the receipt in case the ticket malfunctions.
Collect your ticket and the receipt.
Validate your ticket at the turnstile, and you are ready to go. Please note that old paper tickets need to be inserted in the slot while the new RicaricaMi tickets can be validated contactless.
